It's been awhile since I put anything on this list, so for any newcomers or
others, here it is again.....

I am researching Johannes W. SCHMIDT (John W. SMITH, born 1830) who came to
the U.S. from Prussia circa 1854. He lived for a very short time in
Cumberland, Maryland and then settled in the Somerset County area of
Pennsylvania. He came to the U.S. with siblings named Bernhard (Barney
SCHMIDT / SMITH), Anna Margaretha (Ann Margaret?), and Heinrich (Henry SCHMIDT
/ SMITH). I believe they all settled in Somerset County, and that Bernhard
lived, at least for awhile in Berlin, and then possibly moved to Meyersdale.
The family belonged to the Amity Reformed Church.

John W. married Annie Catherine SASS or SASSE (possibly born SCHNEIDER) who
came from Seifertshausen, Hessen, Germany. Annie was adopted by her maternal
aunt,
Annie Catherine SASSE WERNER.

John and Annie had ten children:

Uriah (born 1857), married to Mary O'MALLEY,
George Washington (born 1859), married to Catherine ANKENY,
Bernard (born 1860), married to Ellen RUMEISER / RUHMEISER
William L. or William A.(born 1862), married to Annie M. (Margaret Elizabeth?)
BITTNER ?,
Milton John (born 1864) - my gg-grandfather, married to Laura BUSKEY and
Christina LINDEMAN,
Anna Margaretha (born 1866), unmarried
Julius Godfrey (born 1868), married to Theresa MORGAN and Annie BARNHART,
Adam Frank (born 1870), Harriett MORGAN,
Eliza Smith AUSTIN (born 1871), married to John AUSTIN, and
Mary Elizabeth SMITH SIEHL (born 1873), married to Conrad SIEHL of Somerset.

I don't know Bernard SCHMIDT / SMITH's wife's name, but believe it may have
been Lydia BEACHLY. Bernard was born in 1836 in Germany (Prussia), and died
in the hospital in Cumberland, MD in 1898.

Bernard and Lydia's children were:

William SMITH, born circa 1862,
Henry SMITH, born circa 1864,
Mary A. SMITH, born circa 1867,
Charles SMITH, born December 1869 (I think he worked in Cumberland for the
Independent printing company),
Emma SMITH, born circa 1873, and
Maggie SMITH, born circa 1877

I would love to share information with anyone having information about these
families. I do have data that goes back into Germany to about 1758.

Thanks,
Deonna Smith Vaughan
