Brethren Encyclopedia has an entry for Johann Georg & Nicolaus DIEHL,
"members of the Heidelberg separatist or radical pietist circle from which
some of the first Brethren came." These brothers (each of whom had a wife
and children) were expelled from Heidelberg to the Low Countries "in the
custody of a military regiment" because of their religious activities.
Johann georg was b 1673, Nicolaus b 1663.
There's also an entry for DIEHL FAMILY. Apparently there are 3 groups of
Diehls, and whether there's a connection isn't known:
J. FREDERICK DIEHL arrived in N. America on the ship Squirrel October 21,
1761, from the Palatinate, settled among the Skippack Brethren in Montgomery
Co. PA. He & his brother Philip were later members of Great Swamp in Bucks
Co. & of the Conewago congregation in 1799, both PA. Frederick & his wife,
Magdalena Harley had 9 children, many of them active in the Marsh Creek PA
congregation.
JACOB DIEHL settled in Lebanon Twp Lancaster Co. PA c1747, was a member of
the Conestoga congregation in 1747 and of Little Swatara in 1770. Had 9
children. Son Abraham Diehl migrated 1804 to Rockingham Co. VA--large
Brethren family in VA & TN. Jacob's son Christian, living in Dauphin Co. PA
in 1790, had 5 sons and 2 daus. May be the ancestor of some of the groups
in the midwest.
JOHN DIEHL possibly a son of Jacob above, bought land in 1783 in Frederick
Co. MD, early member of the Beaver Dam congregation. 8 children.
Descendants active in Brethren in MD.
Another entry is for DIEHL'S CROSSROADS CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN, PA., "located
1 mile east of Curryville." Svcs held in this area at home of Isaac Burget
after 1840. Sunday school began 1854. 1855 built meetinghouse....No
indication as to what Diehls this community was named for.
In the ministerial lists, there are several Diehls, some from TN, some from
IA, a couple from IL, one from VA, one IN. Also a few Deals, and one
Diehl/Deal (IN to ND)
In AMISH & AMISH MENNONITE GENEALOGIES by Gingrich & Kreider, I find a
handful of Diehls in the index: Adam, George & Jacob. Adam & George
apparently connect with the Zook family and Jacob with Keim. No Gore or Gorr.
Jan T
No listing for Gorr.
