Hi listers,
Looking for evidence of births in Southhampton Twp. Valentine
Scheurer/Schirrar/Shirer moved there in 1790 when it was Londonderry
Twp, Bedford Co., and stayed until 1806 when he migrated to Muskingum
Co., OH. He was previously from Maxatawny Twp in Berks Co., PA where his
first three children were born. Six of his children were born in
Southhampton/Londonderry. The family had been recorded in Berks in a
Reformed Church but on arrival in Muskingum, they were Lutheran.
There is a George Scheurer in the Kennells Mills Congregation about
1850. I believe Valentine was not the only Scheurer to come to that area
and George is probably descended from them. Though Valentine shows up in
tax lists as Shirey and Sheirer, he always showed up in church records
as Scheurer until later on when he was referred to as Shirrar, it being
the name on his gravestone (census records show him as Shirer and
Shirey).
Does anyone have any books referencing the churches and cemetery records
in Southhampton? Could be Reformed or Lutheran. None of Valentine's
family died in Southampton that I know of except for Solomon Scheurer
who did not come to Muskingum. He would have been almost thirty and
might have decided to stay or he might have died there sometime after
1790. There might be an Adam Scheurer there also, a possible brother to
Valentine.
There doesn't even look like there is anything where Kennels Mill once
was, at least no indication of a current church or cemetery. If they
lived in this area, I doubt whether they would have travelled to
Salisbury for church services where the other Shirer family had settled.
They might have made it to Wellersburg or been from that area but seeing
that they were Carpenters/Cabinet Makers and had opened a millworks in
Muskingum, they were probably drawn to the waterways around Kennels
Mill.
Any effort would be appreciated.
