Hi,
Does anyone, who is more familiar with Somerset Co. than I, know how
involved the people of this county were in the Whiskey Rebellion? Most
of material I have read, gives Allegany, Washington, Fayette &
Westmoreland Counties as being the principle ones involved. The reason
why I asked is that I have a copy of a law suit between James Spencer
(my ancestor) and a Mr. Tissue which occurred about 1797.
In reading the law suit, there were two bits of information that made
me wonder if there wasn't some involvement on the part of James Spencer.
First of all one of the things that was mentioned was that Spencer had a
still on the property that was sold to Tissue. Secondly, it appears
that while a lot of the negotiation for the sale of the property was
going on, James was not present. In fact it appears he may have been in
Kentucky. I have read where several people fled to Kentucky to avoid
being arrested during the rebellion. Does anyone have any insight into
this puzzle?
