Subject: [SOMGEN] Query Board fiasco

Hi all,
Just wanted to let you know that RootsWeb, our host server, has unveiled
their supposedly new and improved query board system (a product of
Ancestry.com). This new board system replaces our old system and today I
had the first opportunity to actually visit the board and see it.
I am very sad to report that our hard efforts have been trashed! We had
over 500 obituary notices, 200 marriage records, and close to 100 wills and
other assorted records in addition to close to 3000 queries for Somerset
County. They have all been merged into one board with no real way of
searching just by our county. Apparently, you can ask by surname for all
obits but not just by my county.
The new system also requires you to become a registered user of Ancestry.com
(you do not have to pay for a subscription to use the boards) -- this is not
working right either as I cannot even login to my own boards.
I sincerely apologize for this turn of events and regret that the new system
while it looks like a nice place to post a query has reduce our capabilities
of storing records in any online format. Additionally, I now have no way to
recover those donated records -- there is no way for me to even cut and
paste obits into my own system.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I am indeed heartbroken about this
and since there is very little we can do about it but start over...I will do
just that.
Please feel free to post a query to this new board -- but I will be
replacing the link to this system with another board system that is under my
own control.
Best Wishes,
Carol Hepburn
