Subject: [SOMGEN] GLASS (GLOSS) Families of Brothers Valley and Stoneycreek

Hi, everyone. I apologize that this is a long posting but I have tried to
provide as much of the information that I have which might help someone on
this list point me in a direction for finding the answers to two questions:

1.What are the relationships between the Glass (Gloss) families of Brothers
Valley and Stonecreek from the late 1700’s to the mid 1800’s, particularly
with respect to the JOHN GLASS families and a GEORGE WASHINGTON GLASS.
2.I have seen many references to the “Glades” area of Brothers Valley and
Stoneycreek. Is this a particular geographical area or feature and if so,
where exactly is it?

I am trying to identify the parents of my GGGrandfather, George Washington
Glass (Gloss), b. 20-Sept 1835 in Somerset Co. He, or his son, Cyrus William
(my GGrandfather - also born in Somerset Co. 25-Dec-1858 according to the
family bible) changed the family surname to Glaus.

I have found the following baptismal record, which I suspect might be him:

George Washington Glass
Christened 29 Sep 1836
Glade Reformed And Lutheran Congregation, Stonycreek Twp, Somerset,
Pennsylvania
Parents:
Father: John GLASS
Mother: Cardina

I am trying to identify which John Glass this father might be. I have found
records for several Glass families in Stoneycreek and Brothers Valley and
the pertinent baptismal records from the same church, in the same time
frame, list a John Glass as a father of other children - but each listing
includes a different mother.

1. Lea GLASS
Sex: F
Event(s):
Christening: 1 Jan 1828
Glade Reformed And Lutheran Congregation, Stonycreek Twp, Somerset,
Pennsylvania
Parents:
Father: John GLASS
Mother: Sara

2. Mary Anne GLASS
Sex: F
Event(s):
Christening: 31 Jul 1831
Glade Reformed And Lutheran Congregation, Stonycreek Twp, Somerset,
Pennsylvania
Parents:
Father: John GLASS
Mother: Sally

3. Adaline GLASS
Sex: F
Event(s):
24 Aug 1833
Glade Reformed And Lutheran Congregation, Stonycreek Twp, Somerset,
Pennsylvania

Parents:
Father: John GLASS
Mother: Sally

4 Eva GLASS
Christening 27 Apr 1838
Glade Reformed And Lutheran Congregation, Stonycreek Twp, Somerset,
Pennsylvania
Father: John GLASS
Mother: Caty

I have found a JOHN GLASS (m. Juliana) in the census records of Brothers
Valley for 1790. Juliana is listed in the 1800 Census for Brothers Valley
but some unconfirmed references have indicated John died in 1797. I have
also found a JOHN GLASS (with at least 5 sons) who reappears in the 1810 and
1820 census records for Brothers Valley.

I have also found a reference to the baptism of JOHN GLASS, son of Jacob and
Margaret:
Christening: 14 May 1815
Glade Reformed And Lutheran Congregation, Stonycreek Twp, Somerset,
Pennsylvania
Parents:
Father: Jacob GLASS
Mother: Margaret

I know that Jacob, a purported veteran of the War of 1812, was born in
Brothers Valley and he and Margaret, along with a couple of other sons, are
buried in Glade Reformed Church Cemetery in Stoneycreek.

By the year 1850 I can find no JOHN or GEORGE GLASS (Gloss) families in the
census records of either Brothers Valley or Stoneycreek. Also, the name
CARDINA, George’s baptismal mother is unusual and I hadn’t heard it before,
although the 1850 census lists a CARDIRA GLASS living way over in Adams Co.

If anybody has any information that might help me sort out the above I would
be greatly indebted.

Also, I live within three hours driving distance of Somerset so if there are
local records which might be of help to me please advise and I will gladly
make a trip to the area.

Thank you so much!

~Kent
