There is a book on Indian Trails in Pennsylvania which is quite valuable in tracing our ancestors' migrations--so many of the trails became highways later. This book has maps showing each trail, then the information about which highway or county road exists in place today.
Clusters of my ancestors landed in Philadelphia, located in Lancaster Co., PA for a generation or two, then moved to Hagerstown, MD and eventually ended up in Bedford/Somerset Co., PA, all along well-known Indian trails. Many of my Ohio families followed the trail that led toward Massillon, Canal Dover, Canal Fulton, Canton, Cuyahoga Falls and Akron, OH. Highway 30 goes through Stark Co. OH, where many of my Somerset Co. families settled, and is not far from Holmes and Wayne Cos. where there were many other settlers, often Mennonites or Amish, from PA.
Waterways were also important. The Youghiogheny and Cassellman Rivers played an important part in both my mother's and father's lines' movements.
