William J. Miller writes about his family: After he was of age,
Daniel "went south and west, spending much of the time traveling in
the states bordering on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. He also
became a resident of Texas before it was annexed to the U. S."
"In the summer of 1840 he was keeping store in Galena, Illinois,
and while returning from St.Louis where he had been purchasing
merchandise, he made the acquaintenance of the family of Jacob French
who were then leaving their old home in Ohio for a new home inIowa.
Jacob French and his family left the boat at Ft. Madison and bought a
farm within a mile of the town."
Mary Jane moved with her family to Muskingum Co., Ohio, in the
summer of 1818. In 1840 they moved to Iowa.
After marriage Daniel bought a farm three miles from Ft. Madison,
IA, on the West Point road, where they lived until 1 July 1856, when
they sold it and moved to Albany, Linn Co., Oregon, and bought a farm
six and a half miles south of the town. His will leaves 56 acres of
land to three children of daughter Alvilda in Linn Co., OR.
