I received the genealogical portions of a Petition to Appoint Guardians.
The petition was requested by Mary Houpt (deceased husband John Houpt)
for the minor children, John and Mary Ann Houpt. Also petitioning on his
own behalf for a guardian is Charles Houpt, a minor child over the age
of 14. This is dated 18 June 1819.
Mary requests that a Jacob GRAFT be appointed as guardian for the minor
children and it is granted by the court.
I can't make a connection to my own Houpt line and was wondering if
anyone out there knows anything about this family or the Grafts.
I don't really understand this practice either so if someone could
enlighten me I'd be appreciative. If the mother is living, why does a
guardian have to be appointed? Thanks!
Ruth D.
