Checking in the History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Counties, I find the following:
p. 114: a Valentine Houpt served as a Private in Capt. Frederick Hoff's Company of Pennsylvania volunteers attached to the Fifth Battalion, Second Detachment, Pennsylvania Militia, under the command of Brigadier-General Richard Crooks, commencing Oct. 2, 1812; expiration of service, April 16, 1813, fifteen days volunteering included.
p. 125: listed among the Somerset Co. men who served in the 10th Reserve, Company A, rendezvousing at Camp Wilkins near Pittsburgh. On the 1st of July 1861 the regiment moved up the Allegheny river twelve miles to Camp Wright; on 18th of July they were ordered to move to Cumberland, Md, via Bedford, then hurried to Harrisburg, where on the 21 st of July it was mustered into the service of US for three years. Pvt. William F. Houpt mustered in with the company and mustered out with it on June 11, 1864.
p. 461: on the taxables list for Somerset in 1800 were both Valentine Houpt, Sr. and Valentine Houpt, Jr.; both are listed as "joiners".
Hope this gives you some clues to work from!
