COMPTON: May 7, 1889 at residence of his nephew, W.S. Matthews, Berlin, PA,
Archibald Compton, aged 87 years, 2 months, and 28 days.

(Welfley Obituary Scrapbook p.5; transcribed by Betty Smith 2004)

Mr. Compton was born in Monis county, New Jersey in 1802, removed with his
parents to Berlin about 1820. He married Margaret, the youngest daughter of
Rev. Henry Giesey, (who served the Berlin pastorate of the Reformed church
for 40 years.) His bosoms companions death occurred some 15? months ago,
leaving him lonely and partly dependent on his near relatives who kindly
ministered to his wants, and after a short illness, died at the residence of
his nephew, W.B. Matthews, in Berlin, on May 7, 1889, aged 87 years, 2
months, and 28 days, highly esteemed for his manly virtues during a life
long residence amongst this people and worthily enjoying the reputation of
an honest man, the noblest work of God. Mr. and Mrs. Compton were both
teachers of the first Sunday-school at Berlin in 1825?. And now that shrill
musical voice, so often heard in the Methodist Episcopal church (of which he
was an esteemed and influential member) is recollected, but will be heard
there no more, but we trust will be mingled with the songs of the Redeemed.
Peace be to his ashes. A Friend.
