HENRY A. SHAFFER (January 6, 1929)
Henry A. Shaffer, aged 59, residing near Sulphur Springs, who was
injured Sunday noon in the automobile accident which resulted in the
death of his wife, Mrs. Lucy Ann Shaffer, died at 9:40 o'clock yesterday
morning at Memorial Hospital. Miss Myrtle Shaffer, aged 18, a daughter
who also sustained injuries, was reported resting well last night at the
hospital.
He was a son of the late Adam Shaffer and Caroline (Mishler) Shaffer.
His mother preceded him to the grave by nine years, while his father's
death occurred last Thanksgiving day at the home of relatives in
Plainfield. Adam Shaffer was a Civil War veteran.
Six of the 11 children surviving Henry Shaffer reside at home. They are
Franklin, Robert, Myrtle, James, Cyrus and Grace. Cyrus and Grace were
the other two children in the car when the accident happened, both
escaping uninjured.
The other surviving children are: Homer Shaffer, Jennerstown; Mrs.
Edwin Alwine, Conemaugh Township; Mrs. Lloyd Eppley, Jenner Township;
Charles Shaffer, Upper Yoder Township, and Harry Shaffer, Detroit, Mich.
Mr. Shaffer was a member of a family of 13 children, two of whom
preceded him to the grave. The surviving brothers and sisters are: Mrs.
Henry Keafer, Somerset Pike; Mrs. John G. Thomas, Philadelphia; William
Shaffer, Upper Yoder Township; John Shaffer, Salix; Levi Shaffer, Saylor
Street; Mrs. David Hershberger, Upper Ferndale; Mrs. William Good,
Jenner Township; Mrs. James G. Shaffer, St. Mary's, Pa.; Mrs. J.E.
Adams, Hammer Avenue, and Harrison Shaffer, Upper Yoder Township. Mrs.
Frank Kull, a sister, who resided on Saylor Street, was laid to rest
nine years ago, and another sister, Mrs. George Saylor, formerly of
Conemaugh Township, died 35 years ago.
Henry Shaffer was widely known in Somerset County, active in civic
affairs and was Judge of Elections in Conemaugh Township No. 2.
The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer are at the J.J. Saylor home, 130
Hammer Avenue, where brief funeral services will be conducted at 1:30
o'clock tomorrow afternoon, after which the funeral cortege will go to
the Thomas Mennonite church, where double funeral services will be
conducted by the Rev. P.W. Baer, pastor of the Derby Street Evangelical
church. Interment will be in the Thomas cemetery.
