Viv: Now you've opened a can of worms - there's a torrent (well, not really, but more than most of the narratives on the people in that book) of info on him:

GRAY, William 1802 - 1851. He sailed in "Chapman" in 1819 and was married in 1830 to ELIZABETH, daughter of GEORGE MARSDEN. He was an established flock-master in 1834, his house being burned during the war which opened in that year. By 1837 he was offering Saxon rams and was breeding French merino rams in 1842. He was a member of the Lower Albany Agricultural Society in 1845. In 1848 he entertained the Governor of Walsingham and presented an address on behalf of the people of Southwell. He was a committee member of the Eastern Province Agricultural Society in 1849 and was appointed Field-Cornet for Southwell in 1850. He served in the war which opened that year and was killed in action 02061851 Near Kariega River. He was buried at Southwell where a memorial window to him is placed in the church."

Hope this is helpful

Regret no, this is the first I have heard about him. Perhaps Coral Ann ???
Is there any further mention of William Gray in your book?
