I think we will be onto these for a couple of weeks (I only get to go on-line once a week).
Let's start with:
3. Joseph Edward CHOWLES * 1 Sept 1858 d. 26 Nov 1931 Alexandria married the
sister of Lucy, namely Anna Maria CLARKE * 1864 d. 1919. They had 9
children. One of whom married into my SHAW line which ties into the LOCKE
family I am descended from.
I know your ancestor was Emily Loxton LOCKE. I can't tie her into my LOCKE -SHAW connections. I have Mary ELlen LOCKE (1866-?) who married Ambrose Goerge Campbell SHAW. (1860-1948ish) These SHAW's lived next door to my great grandfather at Ghio farm near Alexandria and some of their children are related to me through that side of the family. Their daugther Gwendoline Louise SHAW had 2 sons who married my dad's cousins. Emily Locke SHAW married the CHOWLES and Engela Starr SHAW married a HEATHCOTE uncle. Are you related to this bunch. If so how... I have spent ages trying to unravel this lot of SHAW's...
The next on the list is:
4. Lucy Eleanor CHOWLES * 11 Feb 1862 Alexandria d. 22 May 1905 married
William Henry DEACON * 22 Nov 1861 d. 23 Aug 1922. They had 9 children.
After her death he married his sister-in-law (hope I've got it right this
time) Lucy Eleanor CHOWLES nee CLARKE (see above for her details). The
parents of William Henry DEACON were William Henry DEACON and Maria DEACON
(but I wonder whether her maiden name is correct??) who had another son
named Alfred James DEACON
William Henry DEACON's wife's name was Mary Lucy LISTER (according to SAG) I actually have 4 children for this couple.
b1. William Henry
b2. Frederick Charles
b3. Alfred James (1861-1930) x Caroline Mays CHERRY (1876-1920)
b3c1 Alan Leslie (1898 - 1950) x Doris Lucy _ (1907-1964)
b3c2 shirley grace
b3c3 alfred james (1903- 1956) x Mavis arthur PYNE
b3c4 Doris lucy
b4. Anne Maria
(I do think that Doris Lucy is wrong. (SAG) as ALan Leslie married a Doris Lucy.
The last thing that I can help with in your email relates to:
Please could you post the details you have for Jocelyn and Grahame DEACON.
It would be nice to flesh it out a bit more. I do have a Jocelyn DEACON born
abt 1918 (don't have the parents) who married Molly Vernon FORD. Is this the
same chap? I have a few more DEACON folk who don't have parents and will
post these in a separate email.
Yep! Jocelyn did marry a FORD (whose mother was a STIRK!) If this couple is still alive they are in their early 80's. Do you know if they are alive still, Marielle? Have 4 children who are all possibly still alive. If you contact me off-list I can give details.
I don't have any details for Grahame except born in 1919. No spouse or anything else. According to the St Andrew's Register he was a farmer at Little Grove, Alexandria district.

Hi Joan
Apologies. Let's do this right! She wasn't the daughter, she was the wife of
the brother. I have changed the subject as this has nothing to do with the
original Riddle posting. However, Joan on examining my database I found that
I had two Helen DEACON's. They appear to be the same person i.e. Helen Lucy
DEACON born abt 1915 and her husband's correct details are Linsley Arthur
GREEN * 29 Jan 1910 son of Benjamin GREEN and Ivy HUBBARD. Now to sort out
the Deacon Chowles family! Linsley is the correct spelling as there is an
ancestor in that line with the same spelling.
Charles Edward CHOWLES * 1 Feb 1823 London d. 1866 Grahamstown mar in Graaff
Reinet (would love to find the date) to Maria Elizabeth O'Callaghan * June
1837 Cape Town d. 10 July 1894 Alexandria, E Cape. Children were:
1. Edward CHOWLES (no info on him)
2. Charles Edward CHOWLES * Jan 1856 Graaff Reinet, d. 13 Jan 1913
Alexandria married Lucy Eleanor CLARKE * May 1861 Grahamstown d. ??. Child:
Lita Lily Una CHOWLES. After the death of Charles, Lucy married William
Henry DEACON. Lucy was the dau of Thomas CLARKE & Sarah Eliza HOLBOURN.

5. William CHOWLES * 1863 d. 8 Oct 1895 Eschol, Bushmans River, E Cape. Does
not appear to have been married.
6. George Henry CHOWLES * Oct 1865 Graaff Reinet d. 2 Apr 1897. No other
detail for George.
There is a W DEACON buried in the Edward Str Cemetery, King William's Town
who died 13 Apr 1858. Wonder how he fits in? Also (thanks to Becky) have a
Charles Joseph DEACON * 30 Jan 1866 Cape Town d. 2 July 1933 in Port
Elizabeth. He could be a brother to William Henry ~ do you have his
siblings?
Please could you post the details you have for Jocelyn and Grahame DEACON.
