R2m. boost for school
Parents, pupils raise money
by Liezel Godfrey

Parents and pupils of Clarendon Park Primary in Walmer, Port Elizabeth
have raised a whopping R2-million to build a new wing, adding six
additional classrooms to the school. The 'Beryl Hugo Academic Wing' will
be officially opened on Thursday, 24 March 2005. It has been named after
Mrs. Beryl HUGO or "B" as she was fondly nicknamed. She died on 9 April
last year [2004] after bravely fighting cancer for many years.

According to Clarendon's deputy principal, Mrs. Carol SCHEEPERS, "HUGO
would never be forgotten. She has left a remarkable legacy, which will
continue to be honoured as pupils climb the steps of the new wing. Beryl
HUGO was appointed to the staff in April, 1980, and served our school
loyally for 24 years. It is fitting to recognise what she has done for
the school.''

Clarendon Park originally started in 1948 as a little farm school. The
first extension, funded by the government in 1972, was built with good
foresight in mind. This pleasant surprise was only discovered recently
when preparations started for the present alterations. In the roof a
concrete floor and stairwells were in place, ready for a second storey
to be built. The dream of a new wing was realised when parents funded
the Rl,5-million needed to build the six classrooms, through an
affordable planned building levy which was spread over four years.

While the wing was being built the school appealed to their 800 pupils
from grade 1 to grade 7 to raise R60 000 for a much needed PA system and
furnishing for the new classrooms. They doubled this and brought in R103
000 from an Arithmeton, where each pupil was sponsored to do 100 sums by
family and friends. The new wing is much needed to provide quality
education so that pupils will be in classes of thirty or less.

Clarendon has a history of academic achievement including seeing
ex-pupil Sarah SNIDER from Collegiate High receive the matric of the
year award in 2003. Next week's opening celebration will also be
attended by Grade 8 high school pupils and their parents who contributed
towards the wing.

In memory of their mother, Beryl HUGO's two sons, Jonathan and Timothy
will cut the ribbon at the official opening of the wing and Dr. John
BLACK, the Chairman of the Governing Board, will give the opening
speech. As part of the celebrations Clarendon's 28 classes will each
decorate a cake slab with the theme "new buildings". Each class will
also release one helium balloon in six colours, one for each of the new
classrooms.

Best wishes
Becky
