Hello Peter,

there may well be a connection somewhere in the Scottish history
side of things but on face value it seems they are unrelated. I have yet to
establish when an where James SIMPSON's father Alexander, arrived in South
Africa. I had a quick look my copy of Esme Bull's "Aided immigration from
Britain to South Africa" and also "The Settler Handbook" by MD Nash but so
far nothing. Will keep looking. For such a prodigious lot they certainly
knew how to remain invisible if they wanted to!

I will however, hang onto the data you sent so that they are there 'just in
case'.

Kind regards,
Ray Pitt

Hello Ray,

Sorry I am unable to offer help on Walter James, but I have SIMPSON problems
of my own. My SIMPSONs descend from James (1796-1849) x Ann Allison
(1800-1890) (see pg. 382 of Philips' "British Residents at the Cape
1795-1819). One of their grandsons Joseph Allison SIMPSON was my distaff
g-father,.and my brick walls start with his brothers Robert William
(b.1874), Henry Walter (b.1877), and Clarence Thomas (b.1878). At least two
of these three were "never spoken of", which naturally causes my perverse
"interest volcano" to start smoking. These are the guys that provide lovely
diversionary interest from the mundane list of "begats". At least one
(maybe two) of these brothers migrated to the old Rhodesia. The family in
general had backgrounds in Murraysburg (cabinet making), and Port Elizabeth
/ Queenstown (photography). J. A. SIMPSON was one of the pioneer
photographers on the Rand.

So if any of my reprobates turn up in your research, could we talk?

Regards - Peter

Hey Guys,
I am also chasing after SIMPSON ancestors and so far I've come up
against a lot of blank walls in my efforts! Do any of you have links to a
Walter James SIMPSON b 1867, and Mary Catharine van VUUREN b 1879 The
family tales that have come down via aunts and uncles say that the family
was from Scotland but that's all they know.

Kindest regards,

Ray Pitt

Hi Rob
Unfortunately none that I know of.

In Kingwilliamstown the 1916 Cape Province Directory shows that there are
SIMPSON, A General Dealer, 1 Amatola Row He was also a baker/Confectioner &
grocer SIMPSON, Mrs Laundress, Taylor Street

I cannot find a L SIMPSON, but that does not mean he isn't around as I am
using an electronic search that does not match the "old letters" 100% and I
haven't finished capturing everything yet either. (King is complete though
and I did an eyeball search on this and the district)

No other SIMPSON's in Breidbach or anywhere else in the Kingwilliamstown
district

Best wishes
Mike

Hi Mike,
I don't suppose you have a link with Mary Ann Rebecca SIMPSON b. 12 July
1890, Breibach, King Williams Town. She had siblings Leonard and Albert. I
don't have more info on them, but I'm trying to find her parents and the
link with Scotland in case you can help.
Thanks,
Rob WEBB
