Dear Patricia,

There was a bonus system available to the Cattle Rangers in addition to the
regular pay. If they had to transport the cattle 20 miles or more they would
receive 7 1/2% of the slaughter value of the cattle. If they lost any cattle
en route these were deducted from their bonus.

However if the enemy suceeded in capturing any of the cattle, the bonus was
forfeited.

I guess this was to make sure that the cattle reached their intended
destinations!

My grandfather in a raid early in the war (for which he was severely
reprimanded) wrote several letters asking that his men be rewarded with some
of the looted cattle.!
This stuff of yours is just SO interesting.
