Hi Folks
Please join me in welcoming Sue A? to the List. Hope you going to be very
happy with us. Here is a snippet of news from an Eastern Cape Newspaper,
which I hope makes you feel right at home.
Herald, 17 August 2007
100 Years Ago by Ivor Markman
A selection of interesting century-old snippets from The Herald of
yesteryear.
News from week ending August 17, 1907.
Death of prominent builder
There are few better known members of the building fraternity than Mr. John
ROCHELLE, whose death, we regret to announce, occurred yesterday morning at
his residence in Pearson Street. The deceased gentleman had been in very
poor state of health for some considerable time past and his condition gave
rise to grave anxiety amongst his numerous friends and his demise came
somewhat as a surprise.
Mr. ROCHELLE was senior partner in the firm of "Rochelle & Smith", and came
to Port Elizabeth from the Rand when the partnership secured the contract
for the building of the Mutual Buildings, which today rank amongst the most
notable features of the town. He settled in Port Elizabeth at that time and
on completion of the Mutual premises secured many other contracts in all
parts of South Africa.
Deceased was one of the foremost in his trade and took a keen interest in
all that pertained to the advancement of the members thereof, not only
locally, but throughout the country. He leaves a widow and four daughters.
Best wishes
Becky
