Hi all
Thought I would share this with you in light of Rod's query:
Dear Marielle,
Thank you for writing and for your desire to make your family's record as
accurate and complete as possible. The records on FamilySearch have been
submitted by many people and are only as accurate as the submitter's
information, so mistakes do creep in.
I have copied two Knowledge Base articles below. The first article is about
corrections to the various databases that comprise familysearch. We are not
sure which database contained the wrong information that you mentioned. The
second article gives instructions on submitting the correct information to
the Pedigree Resource File, which is the best way to correct information at
the present time, until the new system is released. I find it easier to
follow the step-by-step instructions if I print them off first.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to submit, edit, correct, or add data to files found on FamilySearch
Internet:
The records found on FamilySearch Internet make up many databases. Files in
some databases cannot be changed. To submit, correct, or add data to these
databases, you will need to format your information as a GEDCOM file.
Pedigree Resource File:
To submit to Pedigree Resource File you must have a GEDCOM file saved to
your hard drive. Then, do the following:
Go to FamilySearch Internet (www.familysearch.org).
Click the Share tab.
Click Share My Genealogy.
Sign on to the site with your user name and password.
Click I am ready to submit.
Read the conditions, and click IAccept.
A screen will appear that lists three steps:
Step 1: Type the location and filename of the GEDCOM file you want to submit
to FamilySearch Internet, or click Browse to locate your GEDCOM file on your
computer.
Step 2: Type a brief description of your GEDCOM file.
Step 3: (Optional) If you have Web pages created from this GEDCOM file, and
would like us to link to those pages, enter the URL of the root or index
page.
Click Submit. You will be shown the submission number and the name of the
file you submitted.
Note: Corrections to the Pedigree Resource file are not available. If you
find errors in the data that you or someone else submitted, you must make
another submission. Your submission will appear on a future compact disc. It
will not replace the previous submission.
International Genealogical Index:
The International Genealogical Index (IGI) contains information as it
appeared on the original record or submission. It cannot be changed. An
alternative to correcting the information on the IGI is to submit the
accurate information to Pedigree Resource File on FamilySearch Internet.
Ancestral File:
We are developing a new system that will incorporate the Ancestral File
data. Until it is completed, we will not accept submissions to the Ancestral
File. (See Ensign, Mar. 2003, 79; Church News, Jan. 4, 2003, 15.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to submit information to the Pedigree Resource File:
Use the following steps to submit information to the Pedigree Resource File:
Save your genealogy as a GEDCOM file. (Many genealogical computer programs
can help you do this. Please see the instructions provided with your
genealogy software for more information. If you use Personal Ancestral File,
be sure to choose the Export to Ancestral File of Pedigree Resource File
option.)
Go to FamilySearch Internet (www.familysearch.org).
Click Share.
Sign on with a user name and password. (If you have not already registered
with a user name and password, you will need to do so before continuing. In
the left panel, click I Need to Register, and follow the instructions on the
screen.)
Click Share My Genealogy, and then click I am ready to submit.
Read the conditions for submission. If you agree, click I Accept.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete steps 1 - 3 for submission
information:
Step one: Select the GEDCOM file you wish to submit.
Step two: Type a description of the file being submitted.
Step three: If you have a Web page you want to link to from your
submission, please give the URL in the space provided.
Click Submit.
You will be shown the submission number and the name of the file you
submitted.
Due to the high number of contributors, it may take several weeks to process
your file. To check the status of your file online:
Go to FamilySearch Internet (www.familysearch.org).
Click the Share tab.
Log in with your user name and password.
At the top of the screen, click Share My Genealogy.
On the left side of the screen, click Check the status of a submission.
A list of the files you have submitted will appear. The list will also show
the status of your submissions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We hope these 2 articles will help you submit the correct information to
the Pedigree Resource File. This will not eliminate the other submitters'
incorrect information, but will at least make the correct information
available for people to see and they will know there is a discrepancy. The
new system will help reduce these inaccuracies. We wish you continued
success in your family history work. Have a great day!
Sincerely,
Your Family History Support Team

Good Morning Becky,
Could you possibly assist me with a problem, which might help other newer
genie hunters. Last night I visited the familysearch.com sight just looking
for any snippets I might be able to gather. What surprised me was that I
could find very little about my own line of GEBHARDTs. There was only one
entry of a Victor GEBHARDT and one of his wives and his two children. The
information presented was incomplete. How does one approach the problem of
getting information recorded, added or corrected for a family or group.
I feel the more information which can be supplied and which is then
presented to the greater genie community, free of charge, will ultimately
benefit all and possibly save a great deal of time.
Hoping you can advise.
Regards,
Rod
