Hi Caroline
Many thanks for all the snippets you have been posting - much appreciated!
I have to query the James Bice BARNES as being part of this family...Can I
ask where this info is from??
I have no parents for this James Bice who did marry Mary Ann Frances
(Franny) NOURSE but I have the following
for this family:
James BARNES (could he be James Whitaker?) b? d before 1819 x Mary DIXON b
Abt. 1782
Children
James b 1804 died before he was 3
James Whitaker b 1807 x Sarah Jane PATRICK
Elizabeth b 1809 (she remained in the UK and came out in 1826 as per
Barnes Elizabeth 19 stepdaughter of Henry Harper* 1826 Shepherd's ) - she
had a child with Edward Crouch (Edwin HARPER)
George Sutton b 1811 x Ann Maria DUGMORE

These are my notes for Henry HARPER x Mary DIXON
THROUGH THE CHEQUERED PATH : The Story of William Howard’s Party of 1820
Settlers
Written by Pamela M. Barnes
On 11th February Henry Harper finally wed Mary Barnes in the Grahamstown
Wesleyan Chapel, with the Reverend John Davis officiating and her younger
son George as witness. For more than 8 years they had maintained the
pretence of marriage that had originated prior to emigration and one child,
a daughter, Maria, had been born in 1822. Perhaps it was her baptism by the
same minister less than two years before that had ultimately persuaded them
to make their union legal.

Matrimonial Court Minutes : Film No. 1886513
Entry #176 : 9/2/1828
Husband: Henry HARPER, 39, Church of England, England
Wife: Mary BARNES, 43, Protestant, England, has children whose ages are as
follows: James, 21, Eliza, 19, George, 14, Maria, 15 [[This age cannot be
correct as Maria was born 15 April 1822 bapt. 4 Apr 1826 Wesleyan Chapel,
Grahamstown by Rev. J Davies as a 3 year old]]

Microfilm# 1560877
Methodist Parish Records
Item 10: Somerset East Marriages 1827-1839
Entry #10 - 11 Feb 1828
Husband: Henry HARPER, No Entry
Wife: Mary BARNES, No Entry
Date: 2/11/1828 mmddyy

Another thing that makes me sure that James Whitaker BARNES x Sarah Jane
PATRICK is the correct James is the naming of some of their children
James Dixon Barnes
George Harper Barnes

Any input from the list???
Take care
Lynn
