Hi Folks
Please join me in welcoming Pete Whitfield to the List. Hope you going to be
very happy with us. Here is a snippet of news from an Eastern Cape
Newspaper, which I hope makes you feel right at home.
Herald, 29 February 2008
100 Years Ago by Ivor Markman
A selection of interesting century-old snippets from The Herald of
yesteryear. News from week ending February 29, 1908.
Council to negotiate land swop
The weekly Town Council was held at the Council Chambers. With regard to a
letter from the Mill Park Estate Company, referring to negotiations that
took place regarding the exchange of land known as "Picnic Ground", which
the Council were desirous of acquiring, and enquiring if there is any
possibility of the exchange being accomplished, as the directors wish to
deal with the land. It was resolved that a reply be sent stating that the
Council is still prepared to exchange the piece of ground for the picnic
ground.
With reference to Gordon Swimming Bath, the Board of Works reported that
having inspected the bath, it was agreed to recommend that subject to the
structure proving watertight, it be opened for bathing purposes; that a
small dressing shed be erected at a cost of about £20; that a caretaker be
placed on duty, and that a charge of 3d be levied on each bather.
The opinion was expressed that the charge of 3d was too much, especially for
boys, and it was resolved that the matter of the charge be left to the
Committee.

Best wishes
Becky
