Your story was fantastic, from little acorns great oaks grow and all that.
Terrific reading.

Very little mail – Jarman update.

How about an update ?

I would just like to give a little snippet to encourage others to look in
the most unlikely places for information –

Amongst my treasures brought back from Africa was my maternal grandmother’s
photograph album. It took me a month of Sundays to scan them all onto my pc
and about the same amount of time to add the names, dates, places or
whatever other information was written on the back (God bless her for that
!).

One can only imagine my joy when I discovered what was written on the back
of the photo of my brother’s christening – naturally one that nobody every
bothered to take out and look at as we obviously knew who the people were –
my Mom, Dad and brother !

But here is what I discovered :

“Bob Hardman, and Ruth nee Walker with their 1st Baby son, my 1st Great
Grandson & 1st Great Great Grandson of Edwin Jarman who arrived in Cape Town
in 1861 to found the Jarman Family in South Africa. Born 30th March ’51 Cut
1st tooth at 3 ½ months
Snapped after christening in Bulawayo S.R.
To Mrs Ethel Sothell
Of “High Irish”
Pinebanks, Cape

Please return after showing round yur family in a few weeks time.
Yrs Sidney ”

Fantastic ! So now I know the search must be continued in England and, as
far as the Jarman family is concerned the SA part can be laid to rest – of
course for any descendants still living there it would be nice to connect up
with them, making the picture complete.

So now I can share what I now know of the Jarman family –

And again how lovely that the person who filled out the DN for Edwin didn’t
just name all the children but put their dates of birth as well !

to Australia like his brother Richard.

Martha Elizabeth ‘Patty’ 8 Feb 1861 – married George SUMMERS (no info) and
they had a daughter called Dorothy.

I have not as yet been able to see these Docs.

Ambrose Henry John 6 Sept 1863
My Mother told me that they never had any children so I am rather confused
about the information found on Ancestry24 -
Surname: Jarman
Gender: M
Birth Date: 30/10/1895
Place Of Birth: Claremont
Father: Ambrose Jarman
Mother: Catherine Jarman
Maiden Name: Carl
Notes: parents European
Register: 1895 Jan - 1897 Sept, Claremont
Source: HAWC 1/3/11/7/1
Source Location: Cape Town Archives

Also my Mother always refered to Ambrose’s wife as her Aunt Adeline and in
the photo album I found a picture of a marriage and on the back is written –

Ambrose Jarman S.A. Scottish & his Bride Adeline Carl
Married in London 3rd Oct 1916
To Uncle Sidney & Aunt Sarah
With love from us both
3rd October 1916

I have found this on NAAIRS :

So my conclusion is that he was first married to Catherine nee CARL and then
to Adeline CARL – so was the second wife a sister, a cousin ??? Other items
I have picked up are –
Milner, Esther
Surname: Milner
Childs Firstname: Esther
Childs Second Name: Kate
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 18 June 1887
Baptism Date: 14 August 1887
Fathers First Name: Wilfred

Fathers Occupation 1: Painter
Sponsor 1: JARMAN, Catherine
Sponsor 2: JARMAN, Ambrose
Officiant 2: DOYLE, Ralph

Pg No: 223

which means Ambrose and Catherine were married prior to this !!! I have not
been able to find any trace of what happened to Catherine – nothing in
NAAIRS. A real mystery !

Ambrose was a photographer. Lived in Claremont, Cape. - property on Station
Rd. had a farm called 'Ambrosia' in Claremont, Laurier Rd.

I did find that Frank had at least two children but the second one was not

My Mother said her Mom often used to talk about her Maclachlan cousins but I
have no information other than written on the back of one of my Gran’s
photo’s – ‘Children of Joyce PRIOR nee McLachlan, June and Roy.’

I have another photo which says ‘ Douglas, Robin, his wife Eileen and a
friend. Jarman cousins’ but I have no idea of who they are !

Joseph 3 June 1875

No information.

Richard 30 June 1881

He went to Australia – found a photo saying ‘Daughter of Richard and sons’.

I am now quite happy with what I have been able to find so far and hope that
in a future visit to SA I’ll be able to check out for myself some more of
these precious documents !

So I hope this will give you all some interesting reading instead of ‘very
little mail’ !

Best wishes to all,
