Hello Jennifer

1. BRITTAIN

1873 - Bro. VIALLS who became Secretary in 1871 presented an engrossed
list of all W.M.s of Albany framed and glazed by BB. Augustus BRITTAIN and
ALLCOCK. This list is still in use and is a valued posession of the Lodge.

Augustus BRITTAIN - Master of Albany Lodge 389 in 1873

2. DIVINE

First Meeting of the Lodge - 20 Sept 1828 - This list seems to have seved as
a roll of Membership.
It seems that the first twenty three should be regarded as foundation
members, since no ballot for
them is recorded; of these nine were settlers the WM, SW, John MANDY, Robert
EMSLIE,
W KIDSON, John WILLIS, James DIVINE, A McKENZIE, and Dr. John ATHERSTONE,
at that time District Surgeon for Uitenhage.

3. DYASON

The endorsements to the 1828 Petition of Albany are on the same date - 26
July 1827,
by the officer of the Union Lodge no 456 Cape Town: John BLORE, Thos L
TOWNSHEND,
D WILLIAMS, E.H. MARSHALL, and by the officers of the British Lodge no 637
Cape Town,
Morris SLOMAN, James MANCHEE, James WALKER, and Bayley DYASON secretary.

4. GLASS

Bro VIALLS reviewed the earlier attempts, and remarked of the first
building.
"the situation of the site does not appear clearly on the minutes," and of
the seceond,
"the building appears to have been completed, but through the mismanagement
on the
part of one or two brethren (we may suppress the two names, though tradition
records
certain mysterious mark on the body of one of them killed by natives, seven
miles from Stone's Hill)
was lost to this lodge, and the ground was sold, and the foundation stone
recovered by
Mr. GLASS in the presence of some BB., but nothing was found under it."
(Quotation from the "Eastern Star".)

5. HALSE

Grahamstown's buildings were without architectural style or charm, may be
reconstructed
from the old Messenger's House in High Street, then inhabited by Bro. T.H.
HALSE,
as the nucleus of Civil Government; or from a stroll along Chapel Street
"the main thoroughfare and stronghold of the 1820 settlers."

First Meeting of the Lodge - 20 Sept 1828 - Then follow on the same, and on
the next page,
seventeen initiate or joining members, of whom nine were settlers.
Signatures include - T.E. HALSE

1840 - Unfortunately in this book the pencilled headings of 17
meetings, between those of the 24th June, 1839 and 1 June 1840, in the
handwriting of Bro. J.H.B. WIENAND, remain to tantalize the historian. In
the 3rd minute book, which is vellum bound and water marked 1839, more
serious omissions occur. The minutes kept in turn by Bro. T.H. HALSE, E.P.
KING, and N. BIRKENRUTH end abruptly after 14 June 1843.
