I forgot:
To transfer your data from PAF to legacy is eay. Just export a gedcom, and
import it into Legacy.
Legacy also has a function called intellishare that allows several (very
many) people to work on the same tree, and then pool their work through one
person, who holds the master file. It is a brilliant facility because you
can tell your cousin to download the free version, import your gedcom, add
his family (huisgesin) and then email a gedcom back to you. In this way, all
your cousins help with the typing, and get infected with the bug!

Hi Francois,
Thanks so much. One thing please tell me about LEGACY. Where do I get it
from? I have got a PAF program from LDS. Instead of Google Earth, I.ve been
using an AA Road Map as my HAMILTONS originate from Ayrshire but moved from
village to village and eventualy to London before comming to SA.
Thanks again,
Regards,
Rob

Hi Rob,
1. distinguish between Ancestry.com and Ancestry.co.uk
2. Join Ancestry.co.uk FOR ONE MONTH ONLY (it is expensive in Rands)
3. During that month you do no genealogy, exept to surf, copy and download
the census records.
The next part of my advice is VERY important.
It is certain that you will find more information than you want. I looked
for William Rogers Jelley (a lookup for a friend!) and I found far more
Jelley people than I imagined, but all of them seemed to be centered around
the village of Alderton.
SO I OPENED A JELLEY TREE IN LEGACY AND PLOTTED IN ALL THE JELLEY CLAN
AROUND ALDERTON WHO WERE IN THE CENSUS. By analysing the tree I buil I was
able to tell, and prove, that this man was baptised "William Jelley" - just
William - and that he had adopted his mum's maiden name, Rogers, himself. He
added it when he wrote his name in the marriage register. For those who are
interested, the Jelley tree that resulted from my search for just one man is
available at:
http://www.onsfamilie.info/search.php?mybool=AND&tree=Jelley
I did the same when I searched for the elusive John Percival Boyd, who added
Percival all by himself. The result of the tree I built to sort out the
census data surrounding the Boyd clan of Cleasby village and surroundings
can be seen at:
http://www.onsfamilie.info/search.php?mybool=AND&tree=Boyd
I strongly recommend:
1. Good quality broadband
2. That you download and use Google Earth
Google earth will allow you to see where the village, town or city suburb
that you are working with is, and it will allow you to see which other
people in the census (same name and surname) live nowhere near the clan you
are dealing with.
My children's maternal grandmother was May Grace Leonie Kempen, and she was
orphaned by the time she was thirteen. It proved impossible to find out who
her father was, so I decided to work the other way around. Instead of
searching for this one ancestor I would search for ALL the descendants of
the 'stamvader', Willem Kempen, who married Anna Catharina Nel in 1809. One
of these descendants has to be the man I was looking for!
By mapping out the entire Kempen clan of South Africa I managed to find the
man I was looking for, even though I had to map out 1240 people in order to
accomplish my goal. (Jelley was only 208 people, and boyd a mere 58 people,
but had I not sorted them in Legacy, I would not have found the solution I
was searching for. Also see my article, 'Beating The Brick Wall' in Genesis
of July 2007.)
http://www.onsfamilie.info/search.php?mybool=AND&tree=Kempen
The bottom line is that you will often be faced with an impossible search
because you find too much information, not because you find too little. What
I am saying is that if you sort the surplus data logically you will find
what you are looking for.
The only way to find a needle in a haystack is to sort the haystack
systematically. Remember that the problem is not a shortage of needles, but
a surplus of hay.

Hi Francois,
Thanks for the kind words. The response was certainly swift and more than
expected. I hope everyone finds what they are looking for.
Can you suggest a source for UK census online searches?

Rob
