Hi Becky

I have Thomas HARTLEY married firstly to Hannah HOPKINS and secondly to Sarah FIELD. Sarah was previously married to Robert GREEN.

I have William John HARTLEY, son of the above Thomas and Hannah, married firstly to Sarah GREEN (NOT the same as Sarah FIELD above - could possibly have been a daughter of the above Robert and Sarah, and therefore William John's step-sister!), secondly to Hannah BAKER and thirdly to Mary CAWOOD.

Strange that father and son both married a Sarah and a Hannah! HOWEVER, Lynn could well be correct in saying that Sarah was a CAWOOD... perhaps closely related to Mary CAWOOD? Who knows!? Unfortunately, I don't have any reference or source as to where the name GREEN came from, but I do note that Sarah FIELD (formerly GREEN) supposedly married William's father on 14 Apr 1812 in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, England, while Sarah GREEN supposedly married William in Norton-Cuckney, Nottinghamshire, England. Perhaps I can get a contact in Nottingham to do some lookups in the Nottingham Archives to see if we can put this mystery to rest!

Regards
Mike

Hi Mike

Thank you for all the extra information.
Will check out your website later.

I do hope that I am reading your corrections correctly.
In paragraph 1 to 3 are you highlighting the wives of Thomas HARTLEY?
Sorry, I'm a bit confused so will add father and son details for your kind
confirmation please. Found some sources that could be of use.

Bathurst - Plot 201, South side of church
Sacred to the Memory of Thomas HARTLEY who departed this life 22 Jul 1840
aged 68 yrs and 5 mths. Affliction sore long time I bore. Physicians were in
vain, but Christ, the Chief gave me relief and eased my pain.
Small metal plaque attached to the top of this catafalque:-
In appreciation of Settler Thomas HARTLEY and his two wives; Hannah HOPKINS
and Sarah GREEN née FIELD. By their descendants, Bathurst, 17 to 19 July
1987.

Page 9 of "The Hartley Story" indicates that Thomas HARTLEY's second was a
widow Sarah GREEN born FIELD.

Russell Clayton expands by highlighting the following:

As you know, William John HARTLEY 1796-1886 married three times. No apparent
children from his first marriage to Sarah CAWOOD. He married Hannah BAKER
circa 1808-1831 on 25 Oct 1828 in Grahamstown. They had one child, Elizabeth
Anne b. Oct 1829. After Hannah's premature death he married Mary CAWOOD 01
Aug 1831 in Bathurst. This pairing produced 11 children.

Another reference:
William HARTLEY, b. 1803, m2. 25 Oct 1828, Bathurst, Hannah BAKER b.1807
William HARTLEY, b. ? Oct 1796, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England;
m3. Mary CAWOOD, 1 Aug 1831, Bathurst.

Does this all make sense?

Best wishes
Becky

Hi Becky

The first William John HARTLEY you mention was born on 9 Oct 1796 in
Norton-Cuckney, and was baptised there on 6 Nov 1796. He was the son of
Thomas and Hannah (nee HOPKINS) HARTLEY.

His first wife's name was Sarah GREEN (not CAWOOD!), with whom he had 3
children before she died in about 1824.

Hannah BAKER was the daughter of Thomas and Esther Baker, Settlers in
Bradshaw Party.

Then you mention ANOTHER William John HARTLEY, who was the son of Thomas
HARTLEY (son of Thomas and Hannah) and Mary Ann KIDSON. This was the
William John HARTLEY who married Sarah Ann KEMP.

William Thomas HARTLEY, who married Martha Louisa PENNY (whom I have
struggled to pin to the PENNY family!) was the son of William John
HARTLEY (the first one mentioned above!) and Mary CAWOOD.

William James HARTLEY was the son of James Hopkins HARTLEY (s.o. Thomas
HARTLEY and Mary Ann KIDSON) and Elizabeth Ann CLAYTON.

All on my web site, mostly with some sort of reference!
