Notorious people do!!
I have to say that in actual fact having a murder (particularly a notorious
one) in a family does aid one's research!! My ggg grandparents John BROWNE
and Maria THURTELL were both double first cousins (they were first cousins)
of the murderer Jack THURTELL (he's been mentioned before).....the books
written about the murder helped to an extent with the family history and
definitely brought the era in which the murder took place into focus.....I
found it fascinating how little 'justice' there was in the legal system in
Britain at the time.... at the beginning of the 1800's there were still
innumerable capital offences on the British Statute books....all the
convicts transported to Australia were there for relatively minor
offences....the horrors they faced when they reached Australia after that
horrific journey makes very uncomfortable reading. I can't be sure about the
number of capital offences there were on the statute books at the time but
there were an awfully large number of crimes you could be hanged
for....being a child didn't protect you either!
One ironies of the THURTELL murder was that the accomplice who turned Kings
Evidence, William PROBERT was hanged at Tyburn three years after the hanging
of Jack THURTELL at Hertford Gaol in 1824 by the same hangman!! He was
convicted of horse stealing. The third accomplice James HUNT (an actor) was
transportd to Australia for life! So far I haven't found out what happened
to him in Australia. I was interested some years ago to find that a
descendant of the murdered man, William WEARE, turned up on a web
site...he's living in Australia!!
Best wishes,
Tombi Peck
