What lovely articulation (not) from Mr Kirkwood.... I simply want them to fix the problem once and for all. Incidentally, I find that when I get the horrid red message I simply keep hitting refresh and at some point it lets me in!

Kind regards,

Dear Mr Mohr

On Sunday evening our service provider SITA has scheduled down time for maintenance for caused NAAIRS to be inaccessible. It appears that unforeseen probelsm were experienced in the system which endured until a short while ago. NAAIRS is currently accessible. Aside from this, I regret that the problem of NAAIRS not being accessible has been occurring ("All Search Manager User IDs in use"), especially after normal working hours.

In normal circumstances, NAAIRS should be freely accessible to any web user. It sometimes happens that the system does not properly terminate individual users' search sessions, and consequently over time the maximum limit on the number of users is exceeded, and the system then prevents new users from signing on. This problem requires the external service provider SITA to "recycle" or restart the support system to free up the user IDs. As this problem also occurs after hours and over weekends it is then not rectified as soon as we would like. The National Archives has been engaging SITA vigorously towards finding a permanent solution.

We regret the impact on service delivery that the non-availability of NAAIRS has within archives repositories and to the public. Every effort is being made on our side to resolve the problem of accessibility and we hope that this explanation will help to place the matter in perspective. You are welcome to let us know whenever the problem occurs so that we can track its occurrence.

Kind regards

Clive Kirkwood
