Hello Vivienne
First let me say that I'm copying this email to a friend of mine who may
have info on various Catherine Solomon ie with this sort of name there could
easily be more than one. I also have various Solomon in my tree and seem to
have failed miserably to place them in families! It's a bit like Smith
really. Incidentally, I suspect the London 1851 database is less complete
than is apparent (so there could be more Catherine Solomon) although it's a
very good attempt at bringing the community together and quite a tall order!
The Cape Archives really does warrant a lot of research. I've been spending
a day or two there during holidays over a number of years - as well as other
archives in SA. You must bear in mind that only part of its contents is
indexed. For the rest you need to leaf through vast numbers of bound and
unbound series of documents. What other information do you have about this
ancestor and her husband and children? Have you found her burial or marriage
records which should identify her father by his religious name at least?
If you search the 2ndhand book search engines you should be able to buy
copies of Louis Herrman A History of the Jews in SA first ed 1930 - mine is
1935 and Gustav Saron & Louis Hotz The Jews in SA, 1955. A series of books
is being researched and written - published every few years entitled Jewish
Life in the SA country communities by SA friends of Beth Hatefutsoth vol 1
2002 - currently awaiting vol 4. Each takes a region of SA and provides a
good deal of detail on some families.
http://www.telfed.org.il/content/jewish-life-south-african-country-communiti
es-volume-iii Otherwise a few years ago a "high level" volume was published
which is less appropriate for genealogists than for other historians as it
does not provide detail on many families but has a different focus on the
development of the community. Of course there are other titles but these
would give you a very good grounding.
Good luck!
Best wishes
Hazel

Hi Hazel
I am interested in the book your mention below by Louis Herrman. I am trying
to find a Catherine Solomon and as a result have been reading a little about
the Jews in South Africa. I am very interested in the topic and read a bit
more when Dr Vince LURIE emailed his information about George Lurie to the
list. Even though I grew up in SA I have never known about the extent of
Jewish immigration, the reasons for, or the influence of the Jews in SA
during the early days. I would love to know more and was just wondering what
the best book to buy was when hey presto your email arrived.
Please could you tell me more about the Herrman book that you mention - what
period/topics does it cover? Is it interesting to read or is it quite dry?
Is there a better book to buy? I am interested in a book that will tell me
more about Jewish immigration and the lives/contribution of the Jews in SA.
Having read just a very little I can appreciate that many people have Jewish
ancestry that they are unaware of.
I have read that the Jewish immigration records are held in the CCP
collections in the Cape Town archives - Are you able to tell me any more
about these records or shall I ask Heather (of Ancestry24)? I am interested
in these records as I do not know whether this Catherine SOLOMON of mine was
an immigrant in the 1850s/1860s or whether she is part of the SOLOMON family
from St Helena. There were many Catherine SOLOMON's in the Jewish East End
of London according to the 1851 database.

As you may be aware, I have been researching the Norden family for a dozen
or so years. My research in the Cape Archives has been considerable and in
the Cory extensive over that period of time. Yet there are some items that I
can only trace back to Louis Herrman's History of the Jews in South Africa -
a secondary source. Herrman was writing at an earlier period when respected
historians were not expected to give references.
THE LOWER ALBANY CHRONICLE. Part One. 1806-1825.
Jones. E. Morse.

I'm afraid I bought this particular volume in a tourist information centre
some years ago for a fraction of this figure. Why not try emailing Margaret
Snodgrass the Secretary
There are two sets of cards of which I am aware - one in the Cory and
another in the Port Alfred Museum. It's amazing work even if frustrating in
this one respect.
Best wishes

I want to agree with Graham. I viewed the copies in Johannesburg at the
Morman centre. The information I am interested in is mostly verified by my
own research and as such provides what I am interested in, namely trying to
colour in the history surrounding my ancestors from that region. It was
never intended to be a reseach document and I accept it for that. Thanks to
everyone that tried to guide me to a copy of the volumes - which, sadly, I
still have not been able to obtain.
