Hi Pam,
Don't want to rain on your parade, but not all churches in South Africa are
on LDS microfilm. As discussed in the past, Abp Desmond Tutu actually had
the records of St George's Cathedral Cape town taken from the Family History
Centre here in Mowbray CApe town for copyright reasons and permission was
not granted for the copying of Anglican records. I think it wasn't Desmond
personally but that is what the staff at LDS at Mowbray say! Many Anglican
clergy are still very opposed to Mormons having access to our records (don't
ask me why - if they don't beleive in what the Mormons teach why be scared
of it)
Fortuantely that has now changed. The present ARchbishop has given
instructions that priests are to co-operate with the copying of records.
Gradually copies are being made by the Utah Genealogical Society - I should
imagine diocese by diocese starting up in Gauteng and working south. Other
denominations might be better. Remember when you say "Church records" in
England you are usually talking about a monolithic the C of E. In South
Africa all the churches are voluntary organisations (not "established" like
in England) and each denomination makes its own decisions about its records.
As David Bossenger said - some records in Grahamstown, some in Wits Library,
some in Cape Town, some microfilmed most not etc.
Derek PRatt
Anglican priest in Cape Town who is waiting with patiences for the arrival
of the microfilms in my parish!
