The Revd- James Alexander Hewitt, DCL

Born: Kloof Cottage, Cape Town, on 13 August 1843, the son of Henry and
Alison Hewitt. Educated: St. Augustine's College, Canterbury (1867).
Married: Riversdale, in 1877, to Aletta Johanna Garcia, the daughter of
Maurice Garcia. (She died on 4 September 1903.] Ordained: Deacon in St.
George's Cathedral, Cape Town on 5 March 1871, by the Metropolitan Bishop of
Cape Town, the Most Revd Robert Gray, and Priest on 1 December 1873, by the
Bishop of Grahamstown, the Right Revd Nathaniel James Merriman (during the
vacancy of Cape Town). Career: Master, St. George's Grammar School, Cape
Town. Licensed as Catechist in charge of the mission congregation, Mossel
Bay, in the diocese of Cape Town, 4 January 1866. "The Rev. J. A. Hewitt,
who has been in charge of [St. George's] mission congregation in Cape Town
since the departure of the Rev. Mr. Light foot for Europe, leaves Cape Town
to-day to enter upon his duties as minister of the English Church at
Bredasdorp, in succession to the Rev. Mr. Langdon, who, for the benefit of
his health, has been moved to the Paarl. On Sunday night Mr. Hewitt had his
farewell service at the Mission Chapel, when he was presented with a gold
pencil case and a hearty address, thanking him for his zeal and services
rendered as a missionary of the Church and a friend of the poor" (Cape
Argus, Tuesday, 21 March 1871). Missionary (SPG), and Curate in charge of
Bredasdorp (licensed 3 March 1871; served until 1876); Rector of St. Matthew
's, Riversdale (instituted 21 September 1876; served until 1880); and of St.
James', Worcester (instituted 2 August 1880; served until 1890), all in the
diocese of Cape Town. Awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law by
the University of the South (USA), 1888. Incumbent of Holy Trinity, Port
Elizabeth (1890-1902); Rural Dean of Port Elizabeth (1896-1902); Canon of
the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. George (from 1899); and Rector of
Cradock (from 1902), all in the diocese of Grahamstown. Author of Sketches
of English Church Histoty in South Africa (1887), and co-editor of the SPCK'
s Dutch Hymnal for South Africa (1876). Died: Grahamstown, on 28 December
