Subject: Roll of the British Settlers in SA by E Morse-Jones - List of Settlers
Date: Wed, 14 Apr 2004 08:55:38 +0200

Hi listers

Here is the list of Settlers who came to South Africa prior to 1820 as
listed in the book "Roll of the British Settlers in South Africa ~
Part 1 up to 1826" by E Morse-Jones. (Published under the auspices of
the 1820 Settlers Monument Committee A A Balkema/Cape Town 1971 2nd
Edition). When I typed it up originally I was experimenting with HTML
and hyperlinks etc in readiness for posting to a web page. I converted
the information back to text and used a colon to separate the surname
from the first name and then commas separate the various fields of
information. Obviously where there is no information for a particular
field there are commas separating the blank spaces.

Take care
Tessa

NAMES OF SETTLERS
The lists following are in three groups, these severally including
Settlers who landed prior to 1820, those who landed in 1820 and those
who landed from 1821 to 1826.
Age at embarkation, occupation where known, the names of wife and
children where applicable (together with their ages), party and ship
are given. Only the first baptismal name is given.

In the case of Moodie's party where a ship's name is not given the
sailing was either in the Clyde or the Garland. Where no party is
given the Settler sailed independently of organised parties. Any
peculiar circumstances are added.

Only children under 21 years of age are shown with their families.
Those over 21 have been listed separately. This is not a new
departure, having been followed by previous investigators.

Differences in particulars to those given in previous lists as in age,
name, spelling, ship's name etc. result from examination of all
available material in the National Archives and inspection of
Registers of Marriage and of Burial, of all denominations, at relevant
places.

Symbols are: w - wife; c - child; p - party; s - ship. [My note:
Because I used columns in tables I did away with the symbols except
for wife and child]
