Hi Pat

Be nice to me now! Who is Dr Johnson? And do you know any more about the 18th century Mrs Thrale?

I have this in Jane WHITE nee ALLEN's notes: From "Emigrants and Settlers - The History of the McGillewie and Vickers Families from Scotland and England to South Africa" 4th edition. p52
"Mrs Jane WHITE born ALLEN became Lydia's (Brown) foster mother. Jane was the wife of James White 1820 Settler. Originally he lived at Kowie River but later became the undertaker in Grahamstown. Jane and James were the parents of Elizabeth Thrale BRADFIELD (1804-1846) (first wife of John Bradfield of Fort Armstrong,), Mary JENKINS (died 1880 wife of Buntingville missionary Thomas Jenkins,) Charles White and Samuel White"

Did I get this from you, Pat, as I have (naughty) no reference for it.

I so love these stories that make our basic information into "people"!

Cheers
Marielle

Just as a matter of interest Elizabeth Thrale Bradfield was the daughter of
Jane White wife of James White 1820 settlers undertaker at Grahamstown at
one stage. They were great friends of my Lydia McGillewie nee Brown. Lydia
was fostered by the Whites after her parents Benjamin and Mary Brown died in
1828. Benjamin born in Lambeth was son of Stephen Brown 1820 settler and his
first wife Mary. Mrs Jane White is said to have been descended from the 18th
century Mrs Thrale a great friend of Dr Johnson
