What long-shot chance, Pat, that William Smith and Elizabeth Marshall also
had a daughter named Maria? I have a Maria Smith, daughter of William Smith
and Elizabeth NN, born 1 August 1871, baptised Wartburg 9 December 1871.
The entry in the baptismal register of the Berlin Missionary and Lutheran
Ministries in Wartburg reads as follows : "This is to certify that Maria,
daughter of William and Elizabeth Smith, born on the first of August 1871,
has been baptized by the undersigned according to the rite of the common
prayer book of the English Church on the ninth of December of the same year
1871". - W. Pain, Berlin and Lutheran Ministries, Wartburg. Maria later
married Arthur Jeffries, son of 1820 Settler lad Edward Jeffries, and died
in East London in 1960.
