I am trying to trace my husbands aunt that was taken to South Africa as a
child and adopted by a relative, exact date unknown. All contact with her was
lost.
Husbands aunt: Ethel OAKLEY born
between 1896 and 1906 parents Richard OAKLEY b1863 Lambeth & Mary Ann
OAKLEY (nee COX) b1863 Paddington.
siblings Richard William b1898
Battersea, Sydney Denis b1900 Battersea, Reginald Stanley b1901
Battersea.
The family then migrated to New Zealand in 1909.
Susan Victoria b1910 Christchurch, Frederick Jonathan b1911 Lyttleton,
Harold Ernest
b1913 Christchurch were born there before their father died.
Most verified by certificates or family history.
I have come across journeys
which I believe is Ethel with her adoptive Caroline Sydney listed on
Ancestry.com,
however I can't seem to find further information which may prove I have
the correct person. Any help would be much appreciated.
Below is the
data from Ancestry.com
June 1903 Ethel SYDNEY age 11 and Caroline SYDNEY travel to Rocky Hill New
Jersey USA to visit a sister Mrs LEWIS (ancestry.com)
Dec 1916
Ethel SYDNEY & Caroline SYDNEY travel to London from South Africa
(ancestry.com)
Jan 1917 Ethel OAKLEY SYDNEY & Caroline SYDNEY travel to USA after staying
with brother in law Mr.SYDNEY in London.
This record states that they were permanent residents of Cape Colony,
South Africa.(ancestry.com)
Aug 1922 Ethel SYDNEY & Caroline
SYDNEY travel from Southampton to Rocky Hill, New Jersey. They name SIR
DAVID HARRIS, House of Assembly,
Cape Town, South Africa as a friend. Caroline is now a widow.
(ancestry.com)
I have been unable to find a marriage for
Caroline so cannot tell where she fits into our family tree. Would love to
put an ending to this family mystery.
regards, Rita
