Hello again:
I had no response to my first request about NORVAL & NORVALL, so I am
trying again in the possibly vain hope that someone might pick it up this
time.
I am interested in John NORVAL (my gggrandfather), b. Glasgow 1795, who
came to South Africa as a member of Moodie's party in 1817, together with a
brother or nephew or both. He m. Mary Jane MURRAY, started a ferry across
the Orange River at a place which came to be called Norval's Pont (this is
still marked as Norvalspont in the 1993 Road Atlas of South Africa which I
have, near where the Colesburg-Springfontein road crosses the Orange), and
had 12 children, the seventh of which (Henry NORVAL) m. my great
grandmother, "Lillie" Cawood (daughter and granddaughter of the 1820
settler Cawoods). Henry, my mother's grandfather, apparently farmed
"Waschbank" on the north bank of the Orange, through which the railway line
ran when it was built. I have a delightful picture of the river at this
point and the railway bridge, probably taken about 1902.
I am also interested in my maternal grandfather, Francis Alexander NORVALL
(2 Ls), who came to South Africa about 1873 from England, to lead a very
adventurous life. He m. (1) Mary TROY, or TROYE, by whom he had two sons
and a daughter; and m. (2) Sarah Henrietta NORVAL (1L), daughter of Henry
(above).
Please can anybody give me any pointers or information. There must still
be lots of NORVALS about. Where do I go from here?
Regards,
David Barlow
