Dear Lesli
Great to hear from you again and thanks so much for the names of the Smith/
Brunette children. The 9th child was not known to me - Henry John Carlisle
Smith ... he is not listed on Richard Shaw Smith's death notice dated 21 May
1912, so he must have predeceased his father. All I can add, is that Richard
died at 'The Manor House', Marylebone Rd, London ... and that his remains
were brought back to SA on the steamship 'Johannesburg', arriving in Port
Elizabeth on 12 Jul 1912. The death notice includes the name 'Brunette' as a
second name for all the children (signed by C L Smith) ... and I have a note
that one of the daughters married a 'Chaplin' in England.
A possible candidate for his wife Caroline's father, is George McNamara
Brunette, who is listed in the 'Cape of Good Hope Almanac and Annual Register
1850' under Division of Uitenhage - School Commision, as Civil Commissioner,
clergyman G.M. Brunette. He was also a Notary. He also appears under
'Clerks of the Peace - Uitenhage' but his name was deleted in the copy I
looked at.
I wonder what has happened to the descendants?
Regards ... Dave
