Hi Deirdre

The IGI (International Genealogy Index)is the same as what you will find
at the LDS Family History Centres. It does have some South African
records however they are from the Ancestral files submitted by
researchers and not from the original parish records. The IGI also has
CD's which cover Europe/Germany etc. When you enter the IGI computer
program on you need to state the "area" that you wish to search - South
Africa is under Africa (I think - or Other), Continental Europe covers
most of Europe - there is a full menu of areas that you can choose from.
Once you have selected the area which you are researching, the computer
will instruct you which CD to load. I do not know if all the LDS
Centres have the full range of CD's - I know that Bryanston has most of
them.

Are you aware that you can extract the records from the IGI CD's and
copy them to a disk and then study the information at home? ( You do
need to convert the file but this is fairly simple with a freeware
program which I can let you have) This is very useful if you are looking
for "a needle in a haystack" or if you want to extract all the records
for a particular name in a particular place or time frame.

I work as a volunteer at the Bryanston FHS every alternate Saturday
afternoon so please feel free to contact me if you have any further
queries.

Best regards
