As a result of this help, a very kind person in Pretoria looked
up the death notice & certificate and send me the details.

Is there any way you would be able to look up similar information
on my Gran, the predeceased spouse Lesley? Then I would be able
to ask that same samaritan if he is able to look it up when he
next goes in to the archives in Pretoria.

Any help would be most welcome, as I have run into a total brick
wall with Robert. I can only think that he must have changed his
name when he arrived in Natal, as the GRO have no record of a
Robert Ian Macdougall born 5 years either side of the date of
birth shown on his death certificate! Makes me wonder what the
old scoundrel was up to..... :)

Were there any census taken of residents of Durban in the 1920's
or 30's or 40's? That would be a possible avenue if it gave his
occupation.
