Subject: Searching Charles & Sarah CLARK backwards & forwards from 1820 Settlers
Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 17:38:50 -0700

I sent the messages below to Pat directly at her e-mail address on 16TH
NOV 1997 & again a similar message on 1ST DECEMBER 1997 & but got no
replies. I have soldiered on in the meantime & have made some progress &
maybe NOW I am in a position to share what I have got on Charles & Sarah
Clark 1820 Settlers if anyone is interested or can add to my
investigations.

16TH NOVEMBER 1997 Hello Pat
I am replying in response to yours asking me to make direct contact.
My gggrandfather Charles(aged 36) & his wife Sarah(aged 31) came to
South Africa with the 1820 Settlers. They were accompanied by three
children Josiah(8) Frances(5) & David(1). I am having difficulty in
determining where they came from in UK & what Sarah's surname was. I
thought that I may get some clues from their Death Notices but have not
been able to find any. A child was born in SA on 1st April 1822 named
Charles Clark. I have his death notice, died 1867 & also a copy of the
winding up of his estate in 1874. Both list his wife as Isabella Ferguson
Brown(IFB) & also his 11 children. I have not previous tried to follow up
on IFB & when I saw your ref I thought I should search this line. Also
from the account of the will that she had remarried Kelly. A Thomas Kelly
in fact. I am trying to find a marriage certificate which may give me the
names of the parents or Charles Clark's baptism which may also give me a
clue.No luck so far but still searching.

MONDAY 1ST DECEMBER 1997
HI PAT

IT IS I AGAIN. YOU LEFT A MESSAGE ON ON
SUN 16TH NOV 1997 FOR ME TO CONTACT YOU DIRECT WHICH I DID BUT I HAVE NOT
HEARD FROM YOU. MAYBE THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY PC?

CAN I RE-CAP FOR YOU THE ISABELLA BROWN CONNECTS

ISABELLA (maybe also Ferguson) BROWN WAS BORN IN DECEMBER 1831 PROBABLY
IN GRAHAMSTOWN ACCORDING TO HER DEATH NOTICE & DIED IN PRETORIA ON 30
OCTOBER 1906 DN 6/9/561 No 3721. HER FIRST MARRIAGE WAS TO CHARLES CLARK
BORN 1ST APRIL 1822 WHOSE PARENTS WHERE CHARLES & SARAH CLARK 1820
SETTLERS.

I AM TRYING TO FIND THE PARENTS OF CHARLES 1820 SETTLER & HIS WIFE'S
SURNAME. BUT ALSO TRYING TO FILL IN ON THE BROWN CONNECTION. I CAN'T FIND
THE BAPTISM/BIRTH CERTIFICATES FOR CHARLES(1822-1867) WHICH MAY TELL ME
SOMETHING ABOUT HIS PARENTS, OR FOR ISABELLA (born BROWN) CLARK (died
KELLY) NOR CAN I TRACE A MARRAIGE CERTIFCICATE CHARLES TO ISABELLA ABOUT
1847.

DAVID HENRY MCLEAN CLARK 3rd

Being a bit of a nana as regards PC's I am having problems getting this
together but I think you get my drift. Maybe that is where I went wrong
the first time!

As they say in the classics YOU ARE NOT READY FOR IT young man!!! ;-(
