Hi everyone!
Regarding my previous enquiry I thought that I should add some further
information that may be significant in trying to locate my relative
T.G.Cochrane who lived in La Motte Cape Provance South Africa and who was in
possession of a VC Medal won by Lt Col Hugh Stewart Cochrane in 1858.
Some of Hugh's brothers were connected to shipping and the Merchant Navy so
perhaps they travelled around a lot. We have just located Hugh's nephews
decendants in Western Australia as George Archer Cochrane travelled the
world in the Merchant Navy, married in Victoria Australia before moving west.

Below is a list of Hugh's brothers. As Hugh had no living issue the medal
must have passed onto one of his brothers decendants.
Their parents were Lt. Col. George Germaine Cochrane and Susan McColl who
both died in Scotland.
1. Thomas John Cochrane. Born 1823 Argyll
Supposedly came to Australia before 1847 and worked in a Mercantile
House in Sydney. We cannot find him in records.
2. Hope Spread Cochrane. Son George Archer Cochrane above in Merchant Navy.
We are in contact with this line.
3. Donald Cochrane Born 1826. Went to Sea. Qualified to be second mate of a
merchant man. Sailed from the Port of Liverpool. Later became Captain in
Merchant Service. Must have died before 1871 as his widow Isabella was
living with her mother in law, Susan in Bath. Do not know if Donald and
Isabella had issue.
4. James Hay Cochrane Born 1833 Scotland. His occupation in 1881 was Civil
Engineer and he was unmarried at that time (1881 Census)
In 1884 (at the time of his brothers death) was living at Rockbank East
Brixham Co. Devon.
5.Fitzroy Somerset Born 1838. In 1884 Fitzroy was "Of the Inman Steamship
Company Limited Liverpool, Tower Buildings Water Street (From Hugh Stewarts
Will)
6. Duncan Born 1841. By 1884 Duncan supposedly came to Australia . In 1861
Duncan lived at 164 St Georges Road Glasgow Lanarkshire and was an
Apprentice Engineer. We have not been able to locate Duncan in Australia.

Hughs only sister Ann Stewart Cochrane married Robert Ferguson Mactier who
was a resident at Hydrabad Deccan before retiring to Bath England.

I am hoping that someone may recognize some of these Cochrane names as their
ancestors I would love to make contact with any new relatives.

Many thanks, Leigh Saddington,. nee Cochrane..
