Hi Coen

Thank you so much for your reply to my request regarding Clovelly Nursing
Home.

I have the following documentation on my father :-

1He was born on 30th June 1917 in Clovelly Nursing Home to (Katrina)
Catharina De Villiers.
No father's name was stated (although through word of mouth we know who he
was)
She was a European born in the Cape Province but her date of birth was not
stated.

2He was baptised in St Paul's Church on 17th August 1917. His God-parents
were
A H Boonzaier, Dorothy Boonzaier and a man named Henry Roy.

3He was named Henry Reuben ROY through this Baptism Certificate (Page 271
No 7613)
His parents were named in the register as Reuben and Johanna ROY. They
lived at
12a Kloof Street Cape Town at the time. (Reuben - my foster grandfather
was also known as Robert Roy and his honourable discharge papers from the
army were in the name of Robert Roy in 1917)

4My father was baptized by Father Zeeman who was the parish priest at St
Pauls (182 Bree Street Cape Town)

5He used this Baptism certificate for all purposes of identification ie
education, military enrolment,
employment, marriage and the registering of his five children.

6He had never been legally adopted and when his foster mother, Johanna,
was dying in 1961
she confessed his true parentage but could only tell him that his mother
was a Catharina De Villiers from the Villiersdorp/Stellenbosch area.

7When he received his original birth certificate (642/17)he found it was
still in the name of De Villiers and as all his certificates, marriage and
children were in the name of ROY he changed
his name to Henry Robert ROY for the sake of convenience on 27th February
1964.

8The staff of The Huguenot Memorial Meseum in Franschhoek have put in a
lot of work on my
behalf and sent me details of four possible Catharina De Villiers, one of
which seems to be
the most likely as there is mention of a baby boy being adopted. There is
no mention of a
date of birth for this little boy. "Genealogy of the De Villiers Family in
South Africa"- page 103
g4 - David Jacob born 15.7.1848 married to Gertruida Petronella (nee)
Zeeman (same name as
the minister who baptized my father but may not mean anything) were the
parents of a Catharina
Margaretha born 16.8.1895 and she had a baby boy who was adopted.

I am trying to confirm whether this lady was my paternal grandmother and
because there are no dates of birth mentioned on any of the documents I
have to hand it really is giving me a problem!!!

I have been involved in this one for the past five years and because I live
in Zimbabwe and cannot give it "hands-on" attention, I need help
desperately! I really would be most grateful if we can confirm one way or
the other whether this Catharina is "mine" or not!

I really am very grateful to you and look forward to hearing from you at
your convenience. Many Many thanks

Kind regards

Jo-anne Pritchard
