There are some scattered passenger lists available in the Cape Archives and
the SA Library in Cape Town (cf: SOUTH-AFRICA-L, 20 May 1998. From: Desre
Sjoberg <>; and from Alan Littlefield"
<>).
However, the only complete records are held in the the Public Record
Office, Kew, London:
Documents "BT 27: Passenger Lists Outwards" (covering years 1890-1960).
These are original handwritten or typed forms, returned by the various
shipping companies, covering all British ports and non-European
destinations. They are arranged by port and date of departure and are not
indexed. Nearly all SA departures (Union Castle line and others) were from
Southampton. There were some departures from London, Portsmouth and other
ports during the 1st WW (I don't know what happened during the 2nd WW).
The PRO does not offer a search service for these particular documents,
therefore they need to be accessed in person. With a voyage date, and ship
name, it would be a matter of an hour or two to find the relevant
information.
