Subject: BENFIELD d. Beira, Mozambique
Date: Mon, 5 Oct 1998 08:04:01 +0200
I recently discovered from a distant cousin that his g-grandfather, Joseph
BENFIELD died in Beira, Mozambique on 17 February 1900. That particular
branch of the family have no other known connections with Africa, he was
apparently on a business trip and was murdered while in Beira!
Unfortunately, I have very little further information. He was a blacksmith
(actually a shoeing smith) from Staffordshire, England, and had apparently
"invented" a nail-less horseshoe.
I'd be very interested in finding out more about this incident, and wonder
whether anyone on the list would be able to give me some hints on where to
look, as I have no experience whatsoever of family history research in
southern Africa (both of my parents were immigrants from Europe).
