Sorry Pat Brown, this is incorrect. Passports are accepted by banks,
police, post office etc. as identification because they contain a
photograph and the national identity number. However, the ID up to now
has also contained the driver's license so it has been essential for any
driver to carry one. It is also a lot more convenient to carry around
than a passport, and it is a legal requirement for any permanent
resident or citizen over 16 living in South Africa to obtain one.
However, if it is lost or is not available a passport is a legally
acceptable means of identification.

But, the identity document cannot be used anywhere except in South
Africa, so for someone living it Canada it is extraneous - which is
probably why Sonia's son was advised that he does not need it.
