Edmund Burrows in his "History of Medicine in South Africa" writes (p.52)
"......in 1743 a small post had been established in Simon's Bay, so that
Cape-bound vessels could put in and find a shelter there from the
storms.The hospital was a temporary structure and was replaced by a more
permanent building in 1765. A surgeon was put in charge of it and
regulations similar to those in force at De Kaap were drawn up for its
management."
