Hi to all listers,
In the baptismal records for St. michael and St. George, Grahamstown there
are plenty of Afrikaans families baptised and you find English in the Dutch
Reformed churches especially in the early days when churches were few and
distances were far they used the nearest and most convenient church so dont
assume because they are english they would be in the english church look at
all the possibilities. You even find that the dominee visited the farm and
then entered the baptism in the church records and it must have been a case
of first come first baptised as they vary from methodist to English to Dutch
Reformed in some cases.

HI
Until recently I firmly believed your theory. I have however found a
member of my very High Church of England family married a Louis Bauermeister
in the Dutch Reformed Church Uitenhage. This must have been approved by her
family as her father - my g grandfather signed as a witness. My bunch
were very staunch members of St. Katherines Uitenhage so what an eye-opener
this has been.
Cheers Coral

The surnames do not sound Afrikaans, and I wonder whether they would have
any connection to the Dutch Reformed Church at that time.
I think even now persons with English sounding names have not become
members of the Dutch Reformed Church.
My 2 cents worth, anyway.
