Subject: SA Dates For Genealogists

Anne's posting was particulary helpful for people like me in the UK who know
very little about South African history, so I would like to thank her for
setting out the dates and events which seem to explain a lot.

My interest is that my wife's father was a la GRANGE whose family came from
the Cape Town area. In due course I hope to obtain his birth certificate to
discover other family names to research, so my wife and two grown up
children can eventually know something about their SA family history and
hertitage.

There must be a UK connection as her father's religion was C of E and he had
English christian names. From details contained in 'Heraldry of South
African families' (1972), Cape Town and C.C. de Villiers 'Genealogies of Old
South African Families' (1981) Rotterdam, both by C.Palma and published by
A.A. Balkema, and 'South African Genealogies' (1989) by J.A. Heese,
Pretoria, Human Research Council, the original French Huguenot la GRANGE
settler was Pierre la (le) GRANGE from Cabriere in Provence, France. He
arrived in 1688 on the ship 'Berg China' and on 16 Nov 1704 married
Margaretha KOOL from Amsterdam (b circa 1690). They are said to have had a
son although no name appears to be given. In any event, the listed details
are mostly in Africaans which I don't understand and the format is
unfamiliar.

Are there any sources where I can find out more about this couple and who
their son was? Presumably la GRANGE ranks as an Africaans name, and that
intermarriage with English settlers in the Cape area was common? Any help
with this will be gratefully received, with many thanks.
