Some years ago I tried to get information on Harrismith. My grandparents
lived there about 1920.
There has been a history of Harrismith written. I don't know the title, or
how it was published. All I have is a photocopy of Chapter VIII, pages
178-209. I also have a photocopy of Page 13 of the Burials in the Parish of
Harrismith which runs from 5 Oct 1920 to 29 September 1923. The register is
in very good condition.
Maybe some kind person can contact the Harrismith library. The register may
be available at the Anglican Church.
My grandparents landed in Durban, and lived there for some years. They moved
to Harrismith possibly for the climate. My grandfather and his brother both
died of Consumption (TB) in Harrismith in 1920.

I have had the same experience. I am wondering if it isn't partly due to the
fact that most of the listers on this list seem to be researching
"Afrikaans" roots on which there seems to be quite a bit of information,
(books etc) and quite a bit of research already in progress. My family only
came to SA in the late 1800's, before that Scotland. My questions were:
1. How or where do I look for maps or such like of the Harrismith area
around the 1880's. Were there such things and if not what is the equivalent?
2. Where will I find records of ships arriving in South African ports around
this time.
3. Where were people destined for the Harrismith area likely to disembark?
Durban, PE, Cape Town etc.
As I said before, I would appreciate any help to get started. I don't even
know exactly when my family arrived. I know that the HESKETHS had left UK by
the 1881 Census and that my grandmother was born in Harrismith in 1883.
The HERBERTs were still in UK in 1881. All three of their children were born
over there. My grandfather, the eldest in 1877, the youngest around 1888.
His father came out to work on the railways.
I am not looking for HESKETH or HERBERT relations here. All the SA ones are
accounted for. I am trying to build up a picture of events after they
arrived.
Regards,
Tricia
