To all of those of you who are asking questions about Woltemade cemetery.
If you live in Cape Town you can go the Regional Services Council in Wale
street (I think the 2nd Floor) where every burial in this cemetery is kept
as well as other's like Plumstead, Hout Bay and a so on. They have huge
draws in which all the plot cards are kept in alphabetical order. So you
can either search by surname or they also have the "Doomsday Books" in
which every burial is recorded according to date. You can then cross
reference to the burial cards from this book as well. It will tell you in
the book the cause of death, the age of the person and the address and more.
I have found this a remarkable source of information as you will be very
surprised to see the amount of still born babies, find people that have
never had death notices and also neighbours and friends that were buried in
the grave. The cards also give you the position the person was buried,
North,S,E,W, and how deep and how much space is left !!!!!
You can also phone them on 487-2911. They will not do blanket searches !!
They are very happy for you to search on your own and make photocopies of
the plot cards.
I have spoken to one or two of the ladies in the office so see if they had
ever thought of putting it all on computer because I would be the first to
volunteer...they said there was too much red tape to get through !!!
Perhaps we should all get together and do a petition or something...any
ideas ?
If anyone would like me to email them a sample of a plot card please let me
know.
regards
Heather
