Dear Pat,
Thanks for looking, I couldn't find any official record of her in Australia
either but the details are thus;
Mary Ann Foster born 28.09.1872 in Ballarat Australia but married in South
Africa at Rand Goldfields Joburg 28.04.1903 to John LEITH, a soldier with
the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. My mother (her gdaughter) is sure that
Mary was a nurse, and it is difficult to imagine any other circumstance
which would take a young Australian woman to a foreign war zone where she
would meet and later marry a British (Irish) soldier.
She died in 1943 in Esher, Surrey UK
Someone on the Aus-Vic-Goldfields version of this list suggested that she
might have been privately funded or Red Cross and so missed off most
official records.
I suppose its not the most burning area of my current research but it would
be very pleasing to tie up this particular loose end. Thank you for any help
you can give.
Ric
